Dr. Kate Wiggins is a nephrologist practising in Melbourne's southeast and bayside areas. She cares for patients with all types of kidney disease and related conditions. Kate graduated from the University of Melbourne in 1998 with first class honours. She undertook her internship and residency at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Melbourne, and in 2003 began training in nephrology. Kate worked in the renal units at the Geelong Hospital, the Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane and St. Vincent’s Hospital in Melbourne, and in 2005 was awarded a fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians in nephrology.
From 2006 to 2009 Kate did basic science research on molecular mechanisms of renal fibrosis in the University of Melbourne Department of Medicine at St. Vincent’s Hospital, and in 2009 was awarded a Doctorate of Philosophy. Throughout her training and PhD candidature Kate was an author on numerous peer-reviewed publications. Kate spent 2008-2009 working in a fellow in renal transplantation at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, South Carolina, USA.
Kate has been working as a consultant nephrologist since returning to Australia in 2009.
Outside of work Kate enjoys spending time with her husband and three children, reading, and going on walks.
